The wait is over! The new Metallica album "Death Magnetic" is out! Read all about it, as well as some other tidbits by clicking "Read More" below!

After checking the Homer's Music web site last night, we saw that they were having a midnight sale of the new Metallica album. So, of course, Tricia and I drove over there last night to get our copy.

I had heard two or three of the songs already, but after listening to it straight through last night, I can safely say that IT'S FREAKIN' METAL!!

A lot of people did not like St. Anger, mostly because of the production. Well, this album they brought on Rick Rubin to produce. From what I heard, Death Magnetic sounds like what St. Anger SHOULD have. Lars found his grown-up double-bass drum kit. Kirk remembered how much guitar solos kick ass. James' vocals are all over the place and sounding fantastic.

It has a very different sound than the last few albums. There are traces of Load/ReLoad and St. Anger in there, but it has the feel, the energy, the HEAVINESS of old school Metallica. It feels great! Most of the songs are all over seven minutes long, and "Suicide & Redemption" is even an instrumental! They haven't had a true instrumental song since the Justice album.

Songs like "Cyanide" and "The Unforgiven III" sounded really out there compared to the rest, but this is not a bad thing. You can tell that Rick Rubin really pushed the band to be the best they could. Musically, these two songs are just very well put together and very complex. "Broken, Beat & Scarred" and "All Nightmare Long" are probably my two favorite tracks. The guitar riffs are just so... HEAVY!

I know I'm a bit biased because of my love for this band, but I have to say that for the first time in a REALLY long time, this album did not disappoint AT ALL. LONG LIVE METALLICA!

On another note, while we were shopping at Homer's last night, I went browsing for albums by a band called The Sword. I had heard of them before by name, but didn't really know much about them. The reason I was interested is because they are opening for Metallica when they hit the road in the US this fall, INCLUDING their stop at the Qwest Center Omaha November 6th!

Well, Homer's had two of their albums. One was labeled as their debut from 2006, and the other was brand new from 2008. I decided to start off at the beginning and picked up their debut album called "Age of Winters". I just finished listening to it for the first time, and I have to say I'm impressed! I can't wait to see them in November. I'm not sure where they are from, but they have that very distinct European power-metal sound to them. I'm thinking I'll have to make a trip back to Homer's soon and pick up their other album as well.

Also, part two of our trip to D*C is almost done. I have the blog about written, but I haven't had internet access at work most of the day so I haven't been able to get the pics uploaded that I need. To be continued!

I refuse to believe the new Metallica album is so good that you don't have time to post about Dragon'sLairCon Day 2!
